Testing the waters

Over the last fortnight we have spent some time finding a water testing facility in Vientiane and verifying that both their testing and quality control procedures are adequate.

To begin, we first determined exactly what water parameters the standard laboratory test covered, in order to ensure that the bacteria analysis worked. Having established this was the case, we then sent in two samples: one, a disguised bottle of drinking water and two, a sample we knew to be contaminated. The drinking water came back as clean and fit for consumption, while the contaminated sample tested positive to a broad spectrum bacteria test.

We also talked to various people in Vientiane who work in the potable water and sanitation field and found that the facility in question is considered capable and has demonstrated adequate quality control procedures.

So we have satisfied ourselves that the facility is of a high standard and can be reliably used to test water purified by our filters. We have submitted some samples from our prototype filters for the full suite of analyses and are now eagerly awaiting the results. These samples came from the most successful model filters to-date. These filters were prepared using different types of coffee grounds and techniques. They were produced to find the best combination that maximises flow rate, taste and filtration effectiveness.
